Our wooden-boxed brass sundial is a completely self-contained portable instrument, inspired by a design from the 18th century instrument maker Peter dolland, founder of a great optical empire. The original is in the London Science Museum. Instruments like this were once used by explorers and navigators to tell the time anywhere in the world. For this to be possible, the gnomon, which casts the shadow, can be set for latitude on a sliding scale and the whole instrument oriented in the meridian by means of a magnetic compass in the base. Full-size vernier sextants were, in skilled hands, instruments of great accuracy, practicality and beauty - a joy to own and use, but also essential to the safety of the ship. Our replica is dedicated to Royal Navy Captain John Cambell, who developed the instrument from its predecessor the Octant in 1757. Crucially his invention was close in time to that of the accurate, portable chronometers, and it was the combination of the two which finally made navigation a science rather than guesswork, saving countless lives. This importance gave rise to the air of mystique which surrounds the instrument and its use, even in today's age of electronic wizardry.
