The detector circuit is a 'heterodyne' type.
The incoming ultrasound is filtered to remove ordinary
audio frequencies and then mixed with the signal from a
tuneable 'local oscillator' to translate the frequency into
the audible range.
Frequencies from 20 to 130 kHz are converted using a
high quality 'double balanced mixer' IC giving excellent
stability and low noise performance with low current
drain.
Power is provided from a 4x AAA battery (not supplied)
Alkaline cells.
The microphone is the latest Murata (Japanese) type,
and the loudspeaker is a super low profile unit with a
weatherproof Mylar cone.
The circuit is constructed using surface mounted components
and is compact stable and reliable.
This design is used by amateurs and professionals alike, and is earning a good reputation for performance, quality and reliability. Not just for Bats! The detector has been used and highly recommended for listening to ultrasound from Rats, and Crickets, (it also locates bicycle punctures very efficiently!) It is simple to use - even by absolute beginners.
